This microfuge design had its inception in the new millenium as the Heraeus Pico. As these centrifuges aged however, overheated motor bearings caused spindle heating problems and this often caused the injection moulded rotors to become difficult to remove from the instrument. Eventually the rotor hub assembly would swell causing the lids to contact the silicone gasket on the centrifuge lid. This eventually would cause power control board failures that limit the lifetime of this well marketed microfuge. The newer Thermo Pico 17 microfuges are a slightly redesigned version of the original Heraeus instruments and they also suffer the same fate after about 10 years of service. If you have one of these microfuges and it has failed, it is best that you replace it with another microfuge because motor replacement and electronic board servicing costs are prohibitive. It is an unacceptable if early failures occur in this particular product line and research scientists need to consider avoiding certain instrumentation brands if they are seeking long equipment lifespans and few service issues. If you have ever moved an electronic balance and it did not work afterwards it probably has one or more broken flexures that suspend the weighing pan assembly in the electrocoil. Not for the faint of heart, repairs of electronic balances require the expertise of a fine Swiss watch maker. Pretty much every lab has heat blocks on their benches and they are frequently left on day after day, year after year, yet they pose a potential fire hazard if the wiring is not inspected regularly. The most dangerous aspect of old heating equipment isn't just the wiring conducting electrical current to the heating element, rather deterioration of ground wiring or and corroded cover terminals. This can result in the inability for the instrument to drain current to ground if a short does occur, resulting in a potential shock hazard as well as fire hazard. Have your heating equipment inspected regularly, especially instruments that are left running at high temperatures or that are used in fumehoods where corrosive chemicals are handled.

Everyone loves on-line equipment auctions but consider the risk. Besides possibly acquiring misappropriated items that could land you in hot water if an OEM serviceman discovers their serial numbers in your lab, there is always the disappointment of paying for and receiving damaged goods. Just look at what happens when heavy items such as centrifuges or vacuum pumps are poorly packed then sent on their way to your facility. Some sellers purposely pack nonfunctional equipment inappropriately so it becomes even more broken during shipping. Then they blame the shipper or even you for mishandling the package. The only way to avoid this nonsense is to deal with a reliable equipment reseller like CU-SEE who ensures instruments are packed carefully or delivered directly to your facility by a qualified technician. We do not ship weigh balances for the simple fact that they are easily broken so unless you are within the Toronto area do not bother asking for a quote on these instruments unless you plan to visit us and pick the item up.

Continuity problems in electrophoresis units are common and can cause recurrent headaches if not solved properly. Common problems are broken platinum electrodes, poor connectivity between cables and electrode posts, bad connections between platinum electrodes and electrode posts etc. Frequently however, because these instruments are manufactured by thermo-injection plastic moulding of bases and lids, parts designed to hold electrodes, posts and wiring to power supplies break. Some simple fixes are often possible but in many cases re-engineering of the attachment points for wiring and between lids and bases is necessary to ensure electrical continuity and permit the instrument to be operated safely. VWR Nutator Problems
Problems occur mainly in the base of this model
CU-SEE will not fix Nutator shakers and it will also not sell them because they are not worth much more than the price of the small AC gear motor that drives the gyrotating platform. This extremely delicate shaker uses an AC motor resembling a $20 furnace humidifier motor, but do not try to replace it with one of those units because they are typically DC powered. Furthermore, the motor is fastened to moulded plastic mounts which frequently break either prior to or during attempted motor replacement. Most newer waterbaths are digital and easy to move around because they weigh much less than older models. However a potential hazard may arise if they are not routinely inspected. Stainless steel waterbaths can leak if the metal becomes perforated either due to corrosion around welds or wear because the gauge and quality of material is poor. Holes can occur in the corners of waterbaths simply because the metal is stretched thin when it is formed. Attempting to repair such baths is often fruitless because the holes must be silver soldered and heat can further weaken the material. Damage caused to Fisher model 220 waterbaths appears to be the direct result of a sharp-edged rack insert which wears holes through tank corners. If you have one of these models we recommend immediately placing the rack in the upside down position so it does not damage the tank. Older waterbaths had heavier gauge stainless steel tanks but the right angle corners had to be seamed and they would also leak if such joints were physically or chemically damaged. Since a leaky waterbath is a potential electrical hazard we recommend they not be left running unattended and that routine inspections be conducted to ensure their safe operation. When in doubt, throw it out!

VWR Rocking Platform Problems

If the VWR rocking platform in your lab is not working properly, or it is making a horrible noise that is driving everyone crazy, rest assured you are not alone. Most people do not know this particular instrument was equipped with an adjustable tilt feature that can changed via an access panel on the back of the rocker. It is this part that is often the cause of the instrument's problems. The adapter disk that is attached to the motor cam by a bumper bolt and wingnut contains an adjustable slot that on some instruments was too wide to immobilize the square on the bumper bolt. As a result, the linkage assembly can loosen and will eventually damage the gears in the motor crankcase. To correct this problem CU-SEE has remanufactured a replacement adapter disk that will fix the tilt assembly in an intermediate position that will not strain the motor.
